The Flash: 19 Easter Eggs And References You Have To See

12. Barry Allen And The Other Flashes

Speaking of other versions of The Flash, there are a lot of signs pointing towards Barry Allen as just the first of many, in this incarnation specifically. In the comic books there have been, to date, four people who have held the mantle for a significant period of time - and Barry isn't even the first. The original Flash is actually Jay Garrick, who debuted way back in the thirties, and based his outfit (lighting bolt-emblazoned sweater and metal helmet with wings) on the Greek deity Hermes. It turned out he existed in an alternate universe to Barry, who used to read Jay's adventures in a comic book, and whose superhero alter ego inspired his name. Without venturing too far into spoiler territory so early on, in the comics Barry Allen ended up vacating the role of The Flash for some time. In his absence Wally West, the nephew of Iris and Barry by marriage, stepped up to the plate. Wally was The Flash for most of the nineties and early noughties, speeding around Keystone instead of Central City, and hooking up with Linda Park. It'd probably be a while before he could appear on the show, what with Barry being pretty young himself; more likely a candidate to show up is Bart Allen, Barry's grandson who accelerated quickly and was a Kid Flash before becoming the proper one. Although, considering the time travel stuff already inherent in the show, maybe these lot could show up sooner than you'd think...?
