In terms of sheer impact, it’s tough to beat the tremors that the Red Wedding inflicted on the landscape of TV as a medium. With legions of appalled fans vowing to quit the show forever (a promise most, of course, didn’t keep) as a result of the harrowing, heinous event, the shock factor was undeniable. Removing Robb and Catelyn Stark from the show put an end to an entire subplot that many fans were most engaged in.
If the Septplosion is a work of art, as beautiful as it is awe-inspiring, then the Red Wedding is the stuff of nightmares. The unbridled horror and unforgiving brutality of the event is preceded by an unnerving calm, with the show’s reputation for momentous episode nines leaving wary fans unable to overlook the warning signs as the clock ticks towards the hellish conclusion. When the doors are closed and The Rains of Castamere begins to ominously play, we know as well as Cat that something is very, very wrong.
The show callously butchers our hopes for justice and our support of the righteous as it massacres heroes we’d rallied behind for years, emotionally invested in Robb’s noble cause. Fans were devastated, the sheer volume of YouTube reaction videos and disgusted feedback a testament to the mass outrage.
