Game Of Thrones: 10 Greatest Deaths (So Far)
3. Everyone At The Sept Of Baelor
Episode - 6x10, The Winds of Winter
Dizzying in its majesty and scale, the annihilation of the Sept of Baelor marks an outstanding play by Cersei Lannister, removing her enemies from the game and awarding her absolute power in one fell swoop. This earth-shaking move put a permanent end to both the Tyrells and the alliance they’d made with the apparently insurmountable might of the Faith Militant.
The nine-minute sequence is a thing of beauty, slowly building to an inevitable crescendo, unfurling as a tapestry of kaleidoscopic horror before its explosive climax. On the Blackwater, we’d seen the awesome destructive capabilities of wildfire firsthand, and we know what’s surely coming even before the moment it dawns on the High Sparrow and the Tyrells that they’d lost. Never before has a massacre been crafted with such artistry.
The resulting explosion of green hell is a moment of such extremity, such finality, that it moves King Tommen to jump to his death in despair. It’s simply one of the greatest set-pieces ever devised for television.
