8. A Grander Age
For a fantasy series centering on the misadventures of kings and queens and nobles, there's never been much veneer to the world of Game of Thrones. It's been gritty and ugly and surprisingly realistic for a show that incorporates dragons and ice zombies into its mythology. The status quo has always been that most factions in Westeros are just about one dirty look and snide comment away from declaring eternal war on one another. Even the Westerosi don't particularly want to be there. But not so in the past. In the past, there were grand tourneys and shining heroes and joyous celebrations without the constant risk of assassination. Duels were fought for fair maidens' hands. Families trusted in the integrity of other families. Robert Baratheon took up his warhammer for love. Jon Arryn joined the cause to save his surrogate sons. The Kingsguard were the finest knights in the realm. There was a ruling dynasty that - aside from a psychotic bad apple or two - wasn't all that bad. Westeros prior to Robert's Rebellion was an idyllic version of the life presented prior to the War of the Five Kings. The contrast could sell the sense of just how much was lost when the noble families rode to war as well as cast Ned Stark's foolishly honorable final acts in a more understandable light.
