2. A Stark And A Bolton

In the show, Sansa's story arc very closely follows that of the books up to a certain point. The last time we see Sansa in the source material she is with Littlefinger in the Eyrie after Lysa has been killed. From here, the show utilises a storyline from the books, but not one of Sansa's.

While Ramsay Bolton does get married, that is where the similarities between book and show end. The Lannisters wish to strengthen their allies, the Bolton's, hold on the north. To do this they need an heir of Winterfell for Ramsay's bride, and since both Sansa and Arya are lost to them, they fake it.

Jeyne Poole, a childhood friend of Sansa, is dressed in the Stark colours and a direwolf sigil, and sent north to marry Roose Bolton's son as Arya Stark. She is treated by Ramsay the same way he treats Sansa in the books, until she is saved by another of her Lord's pets - Theon Greyjoy.

Since Theon grew up with both Arya and Jeyne, he is aware the Lannisters have lied to the whole of the north. He helps Ramsay's bride escape Winterfell by jumping into the snow from the castle walls. Though he did a lot of the work and took the largest risk of all, Theon couldn't have done this alone. He had help from a very unlikely source...
