Game of Thrones is bringing back two of its most acclaimed directors for the final season, both of whom missed Season 8.

Miguel Sapochnik, whose credits include Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, and The Winds of Winter has directed the third and fifth episodes of the final season. Or in other words, those are the two where we can expect to see some huge battles this year. Episodes 1, 2, and 4, meanwhile, have been helmed by David Nutter, who has directed more episodes of the show than anyone else, including The Rains of Castamere and Mother's Mercy. Or in other words, we can expect some big characters to be killed off in his instalments.

The finale, meanwhile, will be helmed by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, following in the footsteps of the likes of David Chase (The Sopranos) and Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) in directing the series finale of their own show. Their previous credits as directors are on Walk of Punishment and Two Swords, and they're directing the finale because, as Weiss told EW: "When something has been sitting with you for so long, you have such a specific sense of the way each moment should play and feel... So it’s not really fair to ask somebody else to get that right."

Weiss and Benioff have also written four episodes of the last six. Longtime writers Dave Hill and Bryan Cogman tackled episodes one and two respectively, with the rest penned by the showrunners.
