Game Of Thrones: 8 Times The Show Went Too Far

3. When So Much Time Was Wasted On A Completely Pointless Romantic Sub-Plot

Specifically, all of the stuff between Grey Worm and Missandei. What was the point? So much screen time was spent establishing the relationship between these two sub-characters, only for it to end up going pretty much nowhere. The worst part is, the material wasn't even that bad. The acting was fine and the scenes, though numerous and cheesy, weren't nearly as cringe-worthy as the show can be at its worst. The problem? It all seems so pointless. Not only that, but it wasted valuable time that could have been used to expand other more relevant scenes (like the portrayal of Stannis) or to insert details and dialogue that the show ended up missing. Was it filler? Why not fill us in on someone slightly more important? At the end of the day, emotional gratification shouldn't have to be manufactured through characters pretty much irrelevant to the main plot. It should come from the main players. Perhaps if the writers weren't so obsessed with trying to find profundity in the relentless beating suffering of pretty much every main character, such sub-plots simply wouldn't be needed.
