Season one of Game of Thrones was a real success for HBO after arguably a major gamble. Fantasy is always difficult to pull off on the screen, but the first ten episodes of this epic saga set the stage for the wars to come, while word began to spread about this exciting new addition to the genre.

Season two, based mainly on the second book of George R.R. Martin's series (but already with some differences) saw bigger budgets given to the show which, while still playing to the political intrigue across Westeros in the main, climaxed with the epic Battle of the Blackwater, which still remains one of Thrones' crowning achievements to date.

We also saw began to see minor characters in the first season start to come into their own: Jon Snow sets off beyond the wall on his own mission, Daenerys begins to grow into the Mother Of Dragons, and Robb heads to war as King In The North, all while the world of Westeros starts to expand. Plus, it's still Tyrion's best season on the show as Hand of the King.
