Game Of Thrones: Ranking Every Major Battle From Worst To Best

8. Frozen Lake Battle

Game of Thrones Beyond The Wall
HBO

From the moment it was decided that Jon Snow and his band of not-so-merry-men would be heading beyond the Wall to literally kidnap a wight, the entire situation had doom written all over it. Unfortunately, the show-runners also decided that the best way to make this a memorable episode was to bring together basically the coolest bunch of characters ever assembled in one place and then throw them headlong into the eye of a storm.

It took a while to get to its crescendo, admittedly, and not enough of those key characters are killed off (yes, yes, that's very sadistic), but the build-up to the heroes being stranded on the island on the frozen lake and surrounded on all sides was beautifully claustrophobic. And to then see Dany swooping in to make the save only to then lose a dragon was just outrageous and the perfect way to really big up the Night King as a real threat.

Also, as stingers go, watching Viserion's blue eye open before the credits was a hell of a thing.
