Game Of Thrones Season 6: 14 WTF Moments From Book Of The Stranger
7. The High Sparrow's Backstory
Margaery is taken from her cell to meet with the High Sparrow, who asks her where she would go if he let her go.
She replies her family, to which the Sparrow suggests this would merely be seeking out sin once again, and begins to regale her with his own sinful story.
He says that his father died when he was young and he took over the family cobbling business, selling more elaborate shoes than his father and making much more money as a result.
However, his epiphany came at a feast one night, where after indulging in fine wine and fine women, he woke up the next day, saw his sins literally before him (naked bodies and moldy food), and decided to leave his life at once, believing there to be more truth in the poor than the rich.
Two things make this scene so brilliant and unforgettable: Jonathan Pryce's magnificent performance, and the camera choosing to linger on his face through several long shots rather than constantly cutting to Margaery's reaction. Terrific direction.
