Game Of Thrones Season 7: 9 Ups And 2 Downs From 'The Queen's Justice'

2. Ice Meets Fire

Game Of Thrones Daenerys
HBO

This is the major talking point from the episode. As outlined earlier, it's the biggest character meeting in the show's history (bigger, even, than Daenerys and Tyrion back in Season 5), and one with a lot of pressure and heavy weight of expectation upon it. Not that anyone really knew how it would go down, just that it had to deliver the goods.

Somehow, it managed to pull it off. The first ever meeting of ice and fire went more towards the former, as a fairly cold encounter played out in the Dragonstone Throne Room. A lot of credit here goes to Emilia Clarke and especially Kit Harington, who perform exceptionally well in such a critical moment.

The scene has some great back-and-forth moments, as we see both sides put up their defences and largely refuse to budge, which is true to both of these characters. It's engrossing to watch (and expertly framed by Mylod) as they trade remarks about their families and the future with a mix of respect and distrust, the latter of which adds a dose of tension to that scene, while it's also incredibly exciting that we are seeing Jon Snow meet Daenerys Targaryen (resisting the urge to go all caps lock there).

They're complemented by their respected advisors, and it's interesting to watch the two young rulers both turning to their older, ostensibly wiser companions during the meeting. Things soften in their second encounter, with Dany allowing Jon to mine for dragonglass. It's not quite as weighty a scene, but doesn't need to be, and the extra lightness means more of the chemistry between Harington and Clarke shines through.
