Game Of Thrones: 10 Characters We Didn't Want To Like
8. Stannis Baratheon
Before we even meet Stannis Baratheon in Season 2, we get more than a few impressions that he's not the most appealing fellow. He inspires no loyalty and "has the personality of a lobster," according to Loras Tyrell. Eldest brother Robert Baratheon confesses that he never loved Stannis. Younger brother Renly Baratheon requires little persuasion to skip Stannis's place in the line of royal succession. Littlefinger wants to get rid of Stannis altogether, and even Ned only wants Stannis involved because of his status as Robert's rightful heir. Basically? Nobody liked Stannis, and we were prepared to not like him just as much. What we were not prepared for, however, was that Stannis is actually funny. Not intentionally funny, of course, and his story arc itself is not at all humorous. In fact, from what we've seen thus far on the show, Ser Loras wasn't entirely wrong in his evaluation of Stannis's personality. Nevertheless, his rigidity and insistence on brutal honesty prove to be surprisingly entertaining at times. He doesn't even want to be king; Stannis only pursues the throne because it legally falls to him. The scene in which he dictates corrections to a letter that will proclaim to the Seven Kingdoms the truth behind Joffrey's paternity is so completely straight-laced and solemn that it's hard not to smile at poor serious Stannis. Fiction buff and writer. If it's on Netflix, it's probably in my queue. I've bought DVDs for the special features and usually claim that the book is better than the movie or show (and can provide examples). I've never met a TV show that I won't marathon. Follow on Twitter @lah9891 .
