1. The King O Tha North
The Moment: It may seem more than a bit predictable to have The Red Wedding top any list on Game Of Thrones' ability to shock, but dont worry; today the focus isn't on the bloodbath itself, but something incredibly depraved from the aftermath. Robb Stark (*deep, northern voice* The king oh tha north) has been slain because Walder Frey takes promises
very seriously, bringing his mother, wife and unborn child with him. Its naturally pretty shocking and swathes of fans have seen their reactions immortalised by friends more in the know, but the moment that really got to me came after the big Twitter furore. The final episode of Season 3 kicks off with the aftermath of The Red Wedding, with Freys men butchering Stark's while through the carnage a grotesque human-direwolf hybrid, with the body of Robb and the head of Grey Wind, is carried. Shockingly, this is all in view of his sister Arya.
Why It's So Sickening: Shouldn't it be obvious? The unexpected massacre was bad enough, but this pushes it over into something truly sickening. You never see it, but the show forces you to imagine the utter disrespect of beheading a murdered man while, we later hear, taking glee from it. Even seeing it as an image now it's a strikingly horrible sight that will forever have fans booing David Bradley, even if he's apparently rather charming as the Doctor in the upcoming An Adventure In Space And Time. Even though the show paints Arya's later attack on Freys soldier as an extreme reaction to what she's just seen, I dont think any Thrones fan would view her for putting a toe out of line.
