11. The Rats In Harrenhal
The Moment: Why Harrenhal was so desired by Baelish I have no idea its a decaying monument to dark times gone by but his drive to attain it made it all the more intriguing to finally discover what was behind those dragon-worn walls. When Arya and Gendry find themselves Lannister prisoners they witness a horrific interrogation (where theres no way out even if you divulge information on 'the Brotherhood'); a rat is placed in a bucket held against a mans chest, where a fire at the far end forces it to burrow into the flesh.
Why It's So Sickening: Suddenly allowing us to fully feel Winstons fear from his trip to Room 101, this is a grim torture method that defies expectations. The thought of something gnawing away at your innards is bad enough (especially when the camera refuses to move away), but after already hearing the screams and imagining your own horror, it the pay-off is that bit worse. But thats not even the worst part. The worst part? Its real. Rats have been used as torture devices in various manners, but during the Dutch Revolt in the 16th Century the exact same method was used as at Harrenhal (although it seems more in an execution manner, rather than the faux-interrogation).
