In the comics, Barbara Gordon is Batgirl/Oracle. She serves as not only the eyes and ears of various superheroes, but also as a dangerous vigilante in her own right. One of the big differences between this Barbara and the Babs in the comics is that Batgirl is the daughter of James Gordon and not his lover/wife as in the series. This same error first appeared in The Dark Knight movies; they chose to make Barbara his wife (and did not even mention a daughter of that name). What's confusing in this show is that Barbara (played by Erin Richards) probably won't become the vigilante that her namesake suggests (although that would add a very interesting element). How this woman will shape Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne has yet to be seen. She showed courage by approaching Falcone on behalf of Gordon, but it is hard to imagine that courage taking the form of a costumed crimefighter. Will she and James name their daughter Barbara Jr.? Not likely. This means that the Barbara Gordon that comic readers are all familiar with will be nowhere to be seen in this series.
