Production on the Batman prequel series Gotham is expected to begin this month, and while we know who the main characters will be, theres still not a lot we know about the show beyond that. In an official description of the series, it was reiterated that James Gordon would be the main character of the series, and that we would watch him manoeuvre around the corrupt Gotham City as a new detective. It also hinted at a closer relationship between Gordon and young Bruce Wayne as Gordon forms a bond with the boy and is determined to catch the man who killed his parents. Aside from that, nothing else was revealed other than repeating that Harvey Bullock, Alfred, Penguin, Selina Kyle, Sarah Essen, Barbara Kean and original character Fish Mooney will be the other main players. Its unclear how much the show will deviate from the source material. Since its a prequel show, its presumably pretty obvious we wont be seeing Bruce as Batman until the very last moments of the series. That, combined with the show touting that it will tell the origins of Batman villains along with Bruce and Gordons, suggests the series will implement changes with its narrative. Similar to the Superman prequel Smallville, its likely that Gotham will take creative liberties with how it portrays these characters in the pre-Batman years while still staying true to the mythos. There are so many directions the show could go, but all roads will eventually lead to Bruce putting on the mask and changing the world forever. Regardless, there are still plenty of early Batman moments that Gotham can adapt, and this article will examine the important moments from the years before Batman came to Gotham City. From the early episodes to the series finale, this show will be able to interpret critical scenes that defined Bruce Waynes journey from boy to man to legend. While the majority of the list pertains to Bruce/Batman, it will also include scenes that highlight other characters from his cast, most notably those who will become his enemies. I have taken some creative liberties with these scenes to fit within the Gotham narrative while also supplying Batman stories that can be used as inspiration. So lets take a trip to the past and look at the 12 moments that must be adapted from Batmans early history.
12. The Birth Of Fear
One of the modern interpretations of why Bruce chose the bat as a symbol of terror stems from a childhood experience. While playing in front of Wayne Manor, he fell into a hidden well on the manors grounds. Landing in an underground cave, Bruce was swarmed by a horde of bats that were resting there. Rescued several hours later, Bruce was traumatized by the event and would develop a deep-seated fear of bats, which will play an important role in a later entry on this list. This event was famously depicted in Batman Begins, so the show will need to differentiate Gotham Bruces experience from Begins Bruces experience, perhaps by having the event take place in a different location.
