Gotham Season 2: 10 Awesome Moments (And 4 That Sucked)

3. Too Many Instances Of Distracting Camp

There€™s a time and a place for camp in a grimy, Batman-related television show. The time being generally during the summer and the place being as far away from any parents who desperately want to actually make noise during sex. Adam West€™s sixties Batman revelled in campy glory and that made it extremely charming. However, for all intents and purposes, that show was actually supposed to be satirical. Gotham, on the other hand, seems to have a desire to take the source material seriously. It can be a jarringly violent show with dark themes that you should only let your young children watch if you don€™t mind checking under their bed for Victor Zsasz every night for the remainder of your existence. If Gotham wants to be regarded as a solemn show, why the f*** is it so visually campy? This was a distraction for the series last season and it€™s somehow continued on in the second season. The inconsistency in tone is extremely jarring. One minute, there's an extremely tense scene in which the Penguin savagely hacks off his brainwashed bodyguard€™s hand after forcing him to take shot after shot of liquor in preparation. Next, you€™re at The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for Non-Threatening Criminals With Coolio Hair. Even Bridgit ended up getting a designer hairdo when she started to gestate into Firefly and it was completely unnecessary. Somebody needs to fire whoever dresses these actors because they seem to think that dropping acid and asking Joel Schumacher for advice equates to good costume design. Take a look at the meeting hosted by Penguin in which the crime bosses of Gotham gathered. Michael Jackson dressed more moderately in his music videos. Beautiful cinematography aside, how can you expect a degree of realism in a television show that looks like it€™s going to break out into a musical at a moment€™s notice? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BserWrrsWXM
