Gotham Season 5: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Ruin'

Down...

1. The Plot Convenience

Gordon Gotham Season 5
Fox

While much of Gotham's final season has been pretty close to perfection, one particular element of the script let Ruin down. In regards to Victor Zsasz's trial, there was a pretty big plot convenience - one that was very hard to ignore.

When Gordon learned that Zsasz couldn't have been responsible for the attack on Haven, he fails to relay the details pertaining to Victor's innocence to Oswald, who insists on having a trial for his former ally in the hopes of proving his guilt. Had Gordon given Oswald this information during their earlier altercation at the GCPD, then the trial wouldn't have been necessary.

However, the writers, clearly hoping for such a trial, had Gordon remain tightlipped and accept defeat, which is pretty convenient to say the least. Sure, the trial made for good television, and it certainly helped in making Gordon stray further down a dark path, but nonetheless, it was uncharacteristic of him to not explain the details to Penguin, and thus the trial came off as contrived.
