Gotham Season 5: Harley Quinn's Origin Explained

1. Ecco Was Shot In The Head

Harleen Quinzel's transformation from psychiatrist to crime queen differs from adaptation to adaptation, but it seems that the electroshock therapy used in 2016 film Suicide Squad is regarded as one of the more acceptable ways for the villainess to be birthed. In spite of this, the Gotham writers have once again opted for something more original.

During her confrontation with Selina Kyle, Ecco's confirms that, like Selina, she took part in a hellish game to profess her allegiance to Jeremiah - a fatal game in which the last person standing is a true follower of the red-headed devil. However, the interesting bit of the story arises when the crazed girl reveals a bullet wound below her skull, confirming that she was shot, but that the bullet remains inside her head.

This injury has undoubtedly led to the character's transformation into Harley, and explains the psychotic behaviour she exhibits throughout the episode.

Whether you love or hate Gotham, no one can deny that the show contributes something new to the age-old Batman mythology, and its originality is one of the very things that made so many people fall in love with it in the first place.

This new take on Harley Quinn could prove to be one of the greatest things the show has given us thus far, and with Jeremiah rearing his head in the next episode, we're sure to get more insight into Ecco.
