Gotham Series Finale: 7 Easter Eggs & References You Might Have Missed In 'The Beginning...'
3. The Dark Knight Returns
After falling into a vat of chemicals, Jeremiah Valeska spent the past decade in a vegetative state. Although he revealed that his brain activity had actually resurfaced somewhere in between, he maintained the charade because he was waiting for Bruce to come home. When that finally happened, he broke out of Arkham.
This was quite clearly a nod to Frank Miller's legendary tale The Dark Knight Returns, during which The Joker became unresponsive for years following Batman's retirement from crime-fighting, and only when his old enemy returned was he able to summon up the strength to pull himself out of it.
The relationship between Jeremiah and Bruce has been one of Gotham's most integral narratives, so it was only fitting for the show to utilise one of the most pivotal scenes in the Batman/Joker comic book saga to highlight that one last time.
