Grey's Anatomy: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

12. Season 15

Grey's Anatomy Season 15
ABC

Although Meredith Grey is the centrepiece of Grey's Anatomy, many of the show's seasons actually pick another character and focus most of the upcoming drama around them. Season one had Meredith herself, season two had Izzie, season seven Callie. In season 15, it's Alex Karev who takes centre stage.

Arguably the medical drama's most complex character, Karev is stuck in love with Jo Wilson and haunted by memories of his mother, all the while trying to prove his worth as the hospital's new Chief of Surgery. Each storyline is powerfully executed, making perfect use of Karev's fractious childhood and compelling contradictions.

Elsewhere, the season also tackles domestic abuse with one of Grey's most powerful hours, when Jo learns the secret of her birth and forms an emotional bond with a survivor of sexual assault. Jo's collapse into depression offers some of the show's most meaningful scenes.

Aside from Karev and Jo, it's not all smooth sailing, with Meredith's insurance fraud storyline and Owen and Teddy's dreary relationship woes proving particularly unconvincing. But even so, season 15 is urgent and affecting enough to survive its flaws. Like Jackson, it finds enlightenment within the heartbreak and horror.
