Grey's Anatomy: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

13. Season 19

Grey's Anatomy Season 19
ABC

Over the years, Grey's Anatomy has had to reinvent itself time and time again. Not just to keep things fresh - though that's a big part of it - but also to compensate for the loss of prominent cast members and to stay attuned to the times.

Season 19 features the show's biggest facelift, as Meredith steps up as Chief of Surgery and attempts to revamp Grey Sloan Memorial with a modern touch. There's a host of new interns who take centre stage, including the pragmatic Jules Millin and charming Lucas Adams, and a sense of great change that shakes up the hospital's veterans.

Not all of the season works, especially in regards to Pompeo's heavily reduced screen time (she appears in barely half of its 20 episodes) and increased, now-monotonous friction between Owen and Teddy, but when it does, it offers some startling innovation.

The best of the season comes from Bailey and Addison, whose work in abortion care causes them to clash with political extremists. It's harrowing and timely stuff, and a striking reminder that even after all these years, Grey's Anatomy still has plenty left to say about the state of the world.
