Hannibal: 7 Burning Questions Left By The Season 2 Finale
3. How Deeply Involved With Hannibal's Scheming Was Dr. Du Maurier?
Of all of Mizumono's last minute twists, the one that was the least explained was the sudden reappearance of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal Lecter's psychiatrist, on a plane with him to parts unknown. The two of them have shared eerie similarities before - chilling unorthodoxy with their therapy and murder being the two biggest ones. This reveal casts a critical light on all her actions in the last season, making things more confusing than ever. Early on in the season, it seemed like Dr. Lecter and Dr. Du Maurier were very much at odds with each other - Bedelia was growing wary of her patient, and he appeared to be growing suspicious of her. She attempted to flee him, but not before revealing to the imprisoned Will Graham that she believed he was innocent. Much later she is found by the FBI and brought into witness protection, where she revealed herself to be a victim of Dr. Lecter's "persuasion", having killed a patient at his suggestion. She is very clearly painted as a victim at this point in the season. This is where things get murky - she gives critical advice on how to catch Hannibal, which ends up falling through for Jack, Will, and Alana. At what point did she start helping Hannibal as opposed to trying to get him caught? Or was she working with him the whole time? Given the background nature of her plot line throughout the course of the season, we must hope these are questions Fuller will answer in season three.
