How I Met Your Mother: 10 Worst Breakups

8. Ted And Zoey

Marshall Lily Breakup
CBS

To many, Zoey was the worst.

Introduced in season six, her initial relationship with Ted was antagonistic, protesting the demolition of a hotel that Ted's company is planning to turn into a bank. Throughout the season though, the two grew closer, began dating, and their relationship....remained antagonistic.

With an entire episode dedicated to Ted lamenting how every conversation turns into an argument with her, Zoey was clearly not the right woman for Ted, and was not warmly received by fans of the show.

Still, the end of their relationship was a painful one to sit through. While it was the right choice for the characters to separate, the way the breakup played out was devastating. While at a court hearing on whether or not the Arcadia hotel should be preserved, Ted first betrays Zoey by going against his word to vote in favour, followed immediately by Zoey revealing she had taped Ted speaking positively about the hotel without his consent.

Watching a relationship completely dissolve due to betrayal makes for uncomfortable viewing, and the realisation that both Ted and Zoey will need time before they can trust again is a tough one to process.
