Kevin. That classic "how did you meet" story, where one is a criminal, and the other a court-appointed therapist. Putting aside for a moment the clear ethical shortcomings here, let's jump quickly back to how Kevin is involved in Robin's worst treatment of Barney.

Despite being with other people, Robin and Barney end up sleeping together, just because the two of them are all-round awful human beings. They decide that they want to be together, so go their separate ways with the intention of each breaking up and then meeting to be together again. Barney duly breaks up with Nora, but Robin chickens out when Kevin says he loves her.

So Robin cheated on Kevin, broke up Barney's relationship, and that was only the start. Later, Kevin proposes and she is unsure. She tells him that she cannot have children and he still wants to marry her. Not happy with this, she systematically shuts down every avenue for children that he suggests - no adoption, nothing.

After talking him out of the idea, they split up - and for the time being, there are four people heartbroken just because Robin couldn't hold up her end of the deal with Barney.
