Luke Cage Early Reviews Call It Marvel & Netflix's Best Yet
Sweet Christmas! They've done it again!
Remember how the MCU consistently knocked it out of the park so much that critics started wondering a little too loudly when the bubble will burst and engineering situations that seemed to suggest it had? That was already almost happened with the Marvel Netflix shows. Jessica Jones couldn't possibly be better than Daredevil, right? Daredevil season 2 couldn't possibly be better again? RIGHT?!
So there was some anxiety - manipulated, but anxiety all the same - that Luke Cage might be the one that stepped down in quality. But don't worry, kids, because the first raft of reviews are saying that it's another five star show (at least in Collider's words).
According to ComicsBeat it's "Marvel's best television effort yet".
Here's Den Of Geek's run-down:
"While these seven episodes didn’t quite have the same effect on me as the early looks at Daredevil and Jessica Jones, the quality and commitment to characterization and story on display in Luke Cage still feels miles ahead of some of their other efforts."
Gizmodo showered the first seven episodes with praise too:
"Luke Cage feels like many different swatches of blackness all at once . It’s got humor, pathos, and rhythm that are distinct from the other Netflix Marvel shows. It’s funkier and pulpier than either Daredevil or Jessica Jones. It has to be, because Luke Cage sketches out a sense of an entire community, one that’s a symbol of how black people have thrived in a centuries-old cycle that’s had them exoticized and disenfranchised. Once he starts shaking things up uptown, all eyes are on Luke Cage. That’s okay because, if the second half of the season is as strong as the first, he’s definitely worth watching."
And Deadline call it both "one of the most socially relevant and smartest shows on the small screen". High praise indeed.
