Marvel's Iron Fist: 10 Spoiler Free Reactions To First Six Episodes

1. It Can't Escape The Controversy

Iron Fist Review 2
David Giesbrecht/Netflix

Since Iron Fist was announced, and certainly since Finn Jones was cast, there's been a lot written about the decision. It's easy to see why the character might prove problematic, given the white saviour feeling attached to it, but with the show now here it's a chance to see how they've handled it.

Unfortunately, the show doesn't make it easy on itself. Early on we see Danny Rand walk up to Colleen Wing, a woman he's never met, and start speaking to her in Mandarin - a language she doesn't really speak. Later, he explains to her, a woman of Asian descent who runs a dojo, about martial arts.

Unless K'un-Lun is portrayed as a more diverse place than it is in the comics, it isn't going to move away from the white saviour and cultural appropriation narratives. And even if it does, it has a litany of other issues to address as well. But then again, it's for fans, not critics, and it's all Trump's fault anyway...
