Marvel's The Defenders: 10 Ways It Sets Up The Next Phase
2. Daredevil Is Born Again
The big emotional wallop of The Defenders' finale is the shocking "death" of Daredevil, who apparently perished in the destruction of Midland Circle. While his friends mourn him, though, Matt Murdock is actually holed up in a convent somewhere, being cared for by some nuns.
While casual fans might just shrug at this scene - well, obviously he wasn't dead - comic book readers will understand the significance of this ending. Both the scenario and the visuals of the scene are practically lifted wholesale from the classic "Born Again" storyline, by Daredevil's most influential writer Frank Miller. It's a massively important arc that also deals with Wilson Fisk learning Matt's secret identity. As this was teased in Daredevil season two, it is looking very certain that "Born Again" will be the basis of season three.
This sequence also features a nun calling for a "Sister Maggie," a character who has been teased before on the show. In the comics, Maggie is actually Matt's mother. Don't be surprised if there is some Murdock family drama to come.
