Marvel's The Defenders: Ranking Every Episode From Worst To Best
6. Episode 1: The H Word
The One Where: Danny Rand returns to New York, Luke is released from prison, Matt has given up being Daredevil, and Jessica is, well, Jessica. We are introduced to Alexandra, the leader of the Hand. A mysterious earthquake shocks New York.
Verdict: Many have criticized the first episode of The Defenders for not getting the ball rolling fast enough, but for me it's a perfectly solid opener. It's immediately exciting to have these characters in the same show, even if they haven't met yet. Likewise, though the writing could be smoother, the direction deserves some praise for its clever use of colour to reflect each character.
There's also a brilliant performance from Charlie Cox, as Matt struggles to adjust to life without being Daredevil. Sigourney Weaver's Alexandra is also set-up rather well, with a sympathetic angle - she's dying - and some suitable mystery - she seems to be immortal. It's a shame the rest of the series didn't deliver on the promise shown here.
