Marvel's Daredevil: 10 Iconic Moments That Must Happen
1. Roulette
Turning traditional flights-and-tights storytelling on its head, 'Roulette' offered a spell-binding glimpse into Daredevil's revelation that his actions can be as harmful to innocents as the villains he puts away.
Sitting by a paralyzed Bullseye, Daredevil relates the story of a young boy by the name of Chuckie who is the son of a client of Matt Murdock's, all the while clicking away with a revolver in a game of Russian roulette.
Upon meeting the boy, Matt notices that Chuckie displays an unusual obsession with Daredevil - often locking himself away in his room to watch old news footage of the hero, and when the boy witnesses Daredevil pummelling his embezzling father, his final tether to reality is severed. After sneaking a gun into school, Chuckie fires on a classmate, severely injuring the child.
Often cited as one of Frank Miller's greatest works, 'Roulette' touches on themes of morality and causality, and asks whether Matt Murdock's role as vigilante is preventing violence, or encouraging it. At the end of the day, there's simply no way to be sure.
The Netflix series has already shown that it's willing to break genre conventions, and coupled with Frank Miller's masterful deconstruction of the modern superhero, it has the potential to transcend the medium entirely.
