As is customary with these Marvel shows - and a lot of streaming series in general - things do start off a little slowly, with the show more concerned with moving its pieces into place than hitting the ground running.

The series, which has a bit of a time jump from the last appearance of Matt in The Defenders, picks things up with the Devil of Hell's Kitch still recovering under the care of Sister Maggie, while Fisk remains in prison.

The first couple of episodes, then, are all about getting reacquainted with where these two in particular are, alongside picking up with other key supporting players, and setting in motion the events that'll play out over the next few episodes (and the remaining seven too). It's slow-paced, but with more of a purpose behind that pacing than we've seen from other Netflix shows, as you do still get the sense that it's building something.

The pacing as a whole feels better here, although it's often in the middle where it starts to drag, so it's too early to say for sure. Nonetheless, the show knows when to cut loose and let fly, and when audiences need a bit of a breather. There's still a bit of bloat and a feeling it might not need all 13 episodes, but that's something that'll become apparent when the full season drops.
