In the 'Born' storyline, written during Garth Ennis' stint on Punisher Max and one of the few comic book arcs that explored the character's days in Vietnam, Frank Castle experienced another life changing event before the events of his family's death. There, a horrific act of war lays the foundations for the character's later turn to vigilantism, and it remains one of the finest stories in Ennis' long running and at times controversial Punisher series.

Anyway, after the Viet Cong and the NVA assault his post (dubbed Firebase Valley Forge), Castle is left as the sole survivor of his platoon. Left with no option but to embrace his inner demons, the marine kills all of the opposing forces and emerges, seemingly unscathed. Of course, we know that this isn't (mentally) the case, and Ennis frames the event as a key moment in the development of the character's decline into vigilantism.

We've already heard of some of the heroics that the MCU's Castle performed on the battlefield, but none of Valley Forge proportions. That could be set to change, however, as the trailer seemingly showed off the character wounded, dispatching what looks to be two members of the Mujahideen with a shotgun.

Again, the footage gets quite grainy in those brief seconds, but the outfits of all involved points towards a military setting. If that is the case, and the series is looking to offer a modern update on the Born storyline, then it's clear that the show won't be pulling any punches. If it's shot in the quintessential Netflix hallway style, then it could be a harrowing moment indeed.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
