7. Bulking Out Seasons With Wobbly Sub-Plots

Series lengths and run-times were a big issue for the Netflix shows. But rather than address the issue and tweak accordingly, they tended to maintain the 10-13 episode structure and fill in the gaps between the main story with some rather pointless sub plots.

Cast your mind back to the most recent example: Billy Russo's vigilante run in The Punisher Season 2, which benefited the story in precisely no way whatsoever. Knowing that this sideline plot-point would eventually tumble sideways into nothingness acted as a real grind against the series' momentum.

Netflix never ceased to make the mistake of either sprinkling on pointless sub-plots or trying to tell two main stories in the space of one series. The easy solution would have been to reduce the series length and keep the focus on the main story. There's nothing wrong with a six-to-eight ep series run. In fact, fans would probably have appreciated it more. Take heed Disney Plus! 13 episode seasons are problematic. Keep it tight and neat to preserve the narrative.
