How I Met Your Mother: 7 Ways Finale Went So Wrong

5. Entirely Demeans His Relationship With The Mother

The relationship that the entire series was always moving towards, Ted and "the one". The mother of his children. The woman who was perfect for him in every single way. Ted Mosby and Tracy McConnell, the parents of Heather and Luke. Even as far back in Ted's life as 2009 when he was dating Cindy, he was most interested in Tracy. The show itself had laid plenty of references both directly and indirectly to "The Mother" throughout the first eight seasons. In one of the biggest achievements of the series, viewers cared deeply about a relationship they had never witnessed between a main character and a character they had never even seen. Even under the many predictions that The Mother would have died to in some way motivate Ted telling the story, her importance never felt any less significant. Viewers still felt like she was "the one" to Ted. The finale revealed that they had only been a couple for nine years, only four as husband and wife. After all the searching and all the downs that he went through, Ted knew that the journey was worth it to find Tracy. Yet the show only has them together for a brief period in comparison to his eight years (in the show's chronology) moping after Robin during the series run and however long after the ending. The news that she is dead is brushed over in a minute or so before moving back to Robin once again. Tracy comes across now as a means to allow Ted and Robin to achieve their dreams (children and career respectively) separately before getting back together. And that's just wrong.
