How I Met Your Mother Ending: 10 Past Faults It Must Avoid
4. Don't Kill The Mother
A common theory among HIMYM fans is that the mother is dead, or some variation of that. Whatever version of the theory you subscribe to, it usually ends in death. While this is an attractive fan theory for those who like a little tragedy with their comedy, it serves nothing to the HIMYM universe. Despite how dark the show has become in the past, this is not the kind of show that would benefit from an ending as ominous as this one. Season 8 was basically Ted in the beginning of a downward spiral, bordering on depression. Hasn't this guy suffered enough? Many fans point to numerous episodes that contain clues or hints that the mother will be dead before 2030. And while some of them are intriguing, it doesn't entirely wash with the message of HIMYM. Even though it's gone to some dark places, ending the series on a down note like the death of your main character's wife is rather counterproductive to a show that has a default position of a happy ending. It is the trademark guy gets the girl story, only this time we know that our hero gets the girl. To take that away from him, and us the audience, is a huge mistake.
