Jay Pritchett is such a conundrum in the TV show Modern Family. He's grumpy, closed-minded and painfully stuck in his ways but, every now and then, there are glimpses of a selfless, lovable teddy bear beneath the whole grumpy boomer façade.

In the beginning of the show, Jay was a very unlikable character. He struggled to bond with his step-son Manny, frequently bullied Phil and appeared to never fully come to term with Mitch's homosexuality. However, as the show progressed, Jay's character ark became one of acceptance, tolerance and, above all else, love.

Played brilliantly by Ed O'Neill, Jay was the stern but fair voice of reason that frequently kept the wacky family from tearing each other apart. Although the Dunphy's and the Prichett's certainly had their differences over the course of 250 episodes, Jay was typically the peace maker who was able to smooth things over in the end with a piece of wisdom or a kick up the backside.
