In a world where we're hinging some pretty sketchy things on historical accuracy I'd like to posit one historical trend; Fathers, even devoutly religious ones, when in feudal medieval struggles for the crown, tend not to burn their daughters alive to get rid of some snow. A tactical mind like Stannis would surely deem that action tactically reckless given the state of his army at the time.
The death itself was horrifying on many levels and may have trumped the outrage over Sansa's rape scene. Maybe it would have been less jarring to the Princess' death if more men were sacrificed? It would certainly make it seem less like a completely out of character suggestion.
The premeditated nature of the infanticide illustrated by Davos' excursion back to the Wall was at least a good way to set up proceedings but it is one of those moments where you think Game Of Thrones may just be well written as villain porn.
