Netflix: 10 Original Horror Series To Binge This Halloween
1. The Haunting Of Hill House
Scarier than many horror films to a degree rarely seen on TV, The Haunting of Hill House is half supernatural horror story and half gripping family drama, mixing the two elements seamlessly in a terrifying yet surprisingly emotional story, mixing in-universe ghostly haunting with uncomfortably realistic personal and familial trauma.
The story follows two timelines in which a family of multiple young siblings and their parents move into the grand Hill House to turn it over and resell it, and the same family as adults dealing with a recent loss, as well as an older one, both connected to strange and terrible occurrences within the house.
With ghosts, psychic children, and dysfunctions and trauma that colour their adult life, as well as mental health discussions both overt and symbolic, the series tells its story masterfully, with one episode lauded for its use of single shot panning and moving sets to move between past and present without cutting.
The horror is real, the jump scares are few and well-done, and it'll have audiences crying from both fear and overwhelming sadness. It's a fantastic show that embodies the scariness of the season, and deserves to be binged - though maybe not alone.
