The idea itself is actually quite compelling. A therapist who interferes in the lives of her patients and tries to single-handedly solve their problems seems like an interesting protagonist. Even though Jean's "meddling" is just an element of the story and isn't even at its forefront, with (a lot of) edits Gypsy could be a serious, feminized version of Bored to Death.

Julie Miller stresses how important it is that the character is actually feminine. Taking on a role reserved for older, bearded men, Naomi Watts breaks another barrier and proves that women can do exactly what men can. And she does it with class, although the bad writing - which we will get to in a minute - sometimes clearly confuses her as much as the viewers.
