Only Fools And Horses: 10 Times Del Boy Was ALMOST A Millionaire
2. Moving To Australia
The scheme:
No dodgy deals here - this entry made for quite an emotional chapter in Del's life.
In the series five finale 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?', Del's old business partner Jumbo Mills returns to Peckham after emigrating to Australia. He asks Del to return there with him as his business partner and to bring Rodney and Albert too. Jumbo, who has already made something of himself out there, seems like the ticket to success the Trotters have been waiting for, and for once things seem completely legitimate.
What went wrong:
In a surprisingly emotional episode of the show, Albert decides to stay in Peckham, having moved around enough already during his life. The two brothers are still set to depart, until Rodney's visa is turned down due to his previous criminal record. In the end Del also decides to stay, after admitting to himself that blood is thicker than water.
Hardcore fans of the show know that Del moving to Australia was originally intended to be ending of Only Fools And Horses, after David Jason stated his intention to leave the show. After changing his mind though, showrunner John Sullivan re-wrote the ending so that Del turned down the move. Really it's more in keeping with his character - Del always was more of a family man at heart, and it makes for a stronger ending to the episode when you realise how strong Del's bond with his brother and uncle actually is.
