Predicting Netflix's Next 10 Smash Hit Shows
3. Space Force
Released: Late 2020
Away from their own original projects, Netflix draws huge audiences by streaming beloved network sitcoms of the past, but it costs them a lot in licenses that they may someday lose to other streaming services. Wanting to cut out the middle man, Netflix have decided to go straight to the guys behind one of those smash hit comedies to make a show exclusively for them.
Former Simpsons writer and King Of The Hill co-creator Greg Daniels established the format adopted by countless modern American workplace comedies when he adapted Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's The Office and then created Parks And Recreation. On his new show Daniels reunites with his Office star Steve Carrell for a comedy that responds to Donald Trump's announcement of "Space Force" as the sixth branch of the US armed forces.
Carrell stars opposite John Malkovich and voice-of-Sonic Ben Schwartz as the military personnel tasked with figuring out what on earth Space Force's directives to "defend satellites from attack and perform other space-related tasks" actually means. It also features Stranger Things' demogorgon performer Mark Steger in a role simply credited as "strange alien".
Having wrapped filming in January and due for release later this year, Space Force could be the show that finally gives Netflix a genuine sitcom big hitter to call its own.
