Ranking Every Season Of The Walking Dead (So Far)

2. Season Four

Daryl And Rick
AMC

Season Four captures the true essence of what The Walking Dead is about: people. The walkers infesting the world are merely obstacles, and this season proves just that. At first, our heroes are safe and seemingly at peace. Then a flu hits and the Governor returns to enact some bloody retribution on his victors, leaving the Survivors scattered and broken.

This is The Walking Dead at its most hopeless, as everyone is beaten and haunted by their failures. Daryl Dixon's breakdown in the episode "Still" is a major highlight, and Carl Grimes' journey to manhood as his father heals from his battle wounds is great to watch. The best episode of the season, "The Grove", lets Carol take centre stage in the show's most depressing and horrifying entry.

The Governor's two-episode appearance is strong in its own right, but would have been better as one episode given what the Survivors are going through at the prison, especially since he dies not too long after the last bottle episode. That's the only real hitch, though, and the rest of the season, for all its hopelessness and emotional journeys, is the pinnacle of the series.

In fact, there's only season which surpasses it...
