Ranking Star Trek Pilots From Every Series Worst To Best

9. While We Wait For A Movie, Why Don't We Travel Out There, Beyond The Farthest Star?

Star Trek The Animated Series
CBS

This episode comes as something of a surprise to viewers who may not have been overly familiar with Star Trek's first animated series: it's actually bloody good!

It has thrills and chills, as the Enterprise is trapped in the gravity well of a dead star, where they encounter a ship that has been trapped there for 300,000,000 years. On board this ship is a malevolent being, intent on escaping and using the Enterprise to do it.

The episode has a lot going for it. The cast returns to play the roles they've originated, and the story itself is gripping and intriguing. The episode is let down down by its animation and dialogue, which has a whiff of a studio still learning to adapt to the medium. However, these are small complaints - Star Trek was back and it was ready to keep on travelling to strange new worlds, keeping the show alive while the convention circuit began to really take off.
