10 Reasons RTD's Doctor Who Return Failed

5. Unexplained Moments And Sloppy Writing

It’s usual for some stuff in Doctor Who to remain unexplained. But RTD really took the biscuit during his second era.

For instance, why does Ruby say her present is June/July 2024 in The Devil’s Chord, rather than December 2023, as established in The Church on Ruby Road?

Apparently this was meant to be an example of the TARDIS messing with its travellers’ heads – also explaining why Sarah Jane claims to be from 1980 (despite hailing from the 70s) in Pyramids of Mars.

But ultimately, it just looks like a continuity error (which the original, Pyramids example basically was).

Similarly, there was originally a scene explaining that The Twist at the End was the result of music flooding back into the world following the defeat of Maestro. But in the event, it just comes out of nowhere.

And there’s more. Why did Maestro’s Harbinger reappear during the Twist? Who was the Doctor talking to when he “cut” Mr Ring-a-Ding’s performance in Lux? Why was that damn road sign on Ruby Road in the Time Window, but not when we first went there?!

Oh, and why did Mrs Flood constantly break the fourth wall? RTD says there was originally going to be an explanation, but it was cut – and, as such, refuses to say what it was.

Either commit to stuff like this, or don’t do it all.
