Red Dwarf X: 10 Reasons To Be Excited

9. Blue Midget

In the first two series, whenever the boys left the ship for any reason, they travelled in the transport vehicle Blue Midget. The show€™s microscopic budget was highlighted in these moments as the shots of Blue Midget were stock shots that were reused in several episodes. By series III Blue Midget had been replaced with Starbug---the transport ship that was used for the remaining series and featured prominently in series VI and VII after the crew had €œlost€ Red Dwarf. Famous for €œcrashing more times than a ZX-81€ Starbug€™s absence in Series VIII was explained by the transport ship€™s crashing---irony thy name is Starbug. Throughout the rest of the series we saw the reintroduction of a redesigned Blue Midget. The redesign met with mixed feelings and criticism over the CGI animation, though for many fans, it was nice to see something besides Starbug. Given that we already know model shots are being used for the space shots and that Blue Midget is returning, all signs point to a return to the Golden Days of the Dwarf---all reasons for excitement over the return of Blue Midget. Though we can hope it will be without a dance number.
