Russian Doll: 7 Big Questions We're Left With
3. Why Did Nadia See Her Younger Self?
Despite everything else that’s already going on, things get even weirder when Nadia starts to see her younger self, causing her to die from cardiac arrest.
We begin to take a dive into Nadia’s backstory which shows the troubled childhood she had with her mother (who died when she was young). Eventually, Nadia realises she can’t run forever. She starts choking on blood and her younger self asks her if she’s “ready to let her die” and she nods.
In an interview, Lyonne said: “What I want is for one person to feel a little less alone, and a little bit like they’re OK and it’s OK and you can keep showing up to fight another day.”
Maybe, for Nadia, this is more about escaping the loop of trauma so that she can move on with her life. Her younger self could be part of some unfinished business she had to deal with before she could move on.
Either way, there’s definitely a lot to unpack with this addition to the narrative, especially with the 4th dimension time theories.
