Sherlock: 10 Best Minor Characters

4. Janine

Sherlock Irene Adler
BBC

Janine crossing paths with Sherlock might have felt like a whirlwind romance at first, but it became clear eventually that it was anything but. This tragic character was incredibly likeable, and from the moment she stepped onto the screen, you knew she'd have a key role to play, even if it ended in disaster.

She was introduced in the episode "The Sign of Three" as Mary's maid of honour and instantly hit it off with Sherlock, flirting and even receiving a dance lesson from him. Eventually, it was revealed in the episode "His Last Vow" that the two had formed a relationship.

While seeing Sherlock "date" might have been a little bit of fan service, it didn't take away from the fact that she brought out a side of Sherlock that viewers had never seen before. It's a shame it was all a ruse from the detective, as he wanted to use her position as the PA of Charles Magnussen for his investigation.

Afterwards - rightfully so - their relationship ended, as Sherlock's fake proposal unveiled that their relationship had been a lie. Still, she got a fair bit of cash for selling their story and bought herself a lovely cottage, so at least it worked out for her in the end.
