8. Watson Is Captured By Moriarty – The Great Game
The finale of Series 1 was a fast-paced adventure in which our favourite detective was able to cut through a number of baffling cases with his superior intellect. However, even Sherlock did not foresee Watson getting captured by Moriarty.
As with all of Moriarty's victims in this episode, Watson meets Sherlock with a multitude of explosives attached to him.
In addition to being unexpected, this scene also shines light on Sherlock’s character arc during the first series. Far from being the emotionless sociopath he claims to be, his reaction to Moriarty’s trap demonstrates how he genuinely cares for his companion.
As such, the ending of Series 1 is both thrilling and emotionally satisfying thanks to a character-driven plot twist no one saw coming.
