The Simpsons: Homer's 10 Most Astounding Acts Of Stupidity

1. I Am So Smart, S-M-R-T €“ Homer Goes To College

The Simpsons I Am So Smart Homers stupidity often goes unnoticed at the Springfield Nuclear Plant, but after a random inspection which ends up in Homer €“ against all logic and reason €“ melting down a completely benign, nuclear-material-lacking test van while responding to a simulated emergency procedure, Mr.Burns realises just how under qualified Homer is at his job and orders him to go to college to retake nuclear physics. Poor Homer gets rejected to every college he applies to, but with a little help from Mr. Burns he gets accepted to Springfield University. To celebrate such an achievement he sets fire to his high school diploma, claiming he'll not need it anymore. All the while, he performs a song and dance with the now universally quoted lyrics "I am so smart, I am so smart, S-M-R-T! I mean S-M-A-R-T!" However, unknowingly to an elated Homer, the Simpson home is being engulfed in flames from the diploma burning, all while he carries on dancing and singing. It's not unlike The Towering Inferno, albeit set to a rhythm. In an interview, creator Matt Groening has said that when recording the audio for the episode, Dan Castellaneta botched his lines and genuinely messed up "S-M-A-R-T". They thought it was so funny so they kept it in. I think we're all glad they did. Well, everyone but Marge €“ she was probably livid at the wall repair costs.
