"Jean-Luc, there's something I've been meaning to tell you..." has been simmering under the surface of Star Trek since Doctor Crusher beamed aboard the Enterprise in Encounter at Farpoint.

The Naked Now immediately after also touched on the potential romance as the pair were infected with a variant of the Psy-2000 virus. The original script for The Arsenal of Freedom had planned to reveal Beverly's feelings for the captain, however, it would have to wait until the final season for there to be any further traction on the matter.

Mentally linked by the Prytt, the pair are initially only able to sense suggestions but the bond grows stronger over time, leading to Picard's true feelings for his chief medical officer becoming crystal clear. Attached is an unusual episode in that this pairing rarely came together in such a way throughout the course of the show. Here in season seven the writers realised it was a plot point that had remained untouched. All Good Things would further suggest that the pair were destined to be together - although it has taken a further four movies and 20 episodes of Picard to come close to breaching the subject once more.
